The meaning of a “proper” burial takes on unexpected weight as the body comes to represent more than a fallen countryman to both. To Darin: his own chapter in the oral legends that define the Ex-pat community. To Simon: a sense of his own transience. Their journey begins when Darin forces the idea of searching out the perfect burial spot while hawking their magazine to Ex-pat colonies along the way to the annual Spring Scream Festival bacchanal in Southern Taiwan. Complications arise when the morgue will not release the body to them. They succeed in stealing the corpse with the help of a disgruntled and beautiful morgue employee, Nikita Chen. She not only facilitates their heist but also decides to join the duo on their bent odyssey. Much to Darin's dismay, sparks immediately fly between her and Simon. A stop at Nikita’s grandmother’s house for Qing ming festival (Tomb Sweeping Day) leads to an uncomfortable tryst between Nikita and Simon. However, the overarching sense of tradition and family, along with a large amount of rice liquor, soon mellows the uneasiness, and Simon and Darin are welcomed whole- heartedly into the fold. The three continue South with Jed iced down inside a large drink cooler in the back of their little blue truck. The duty, transport, and dementia (triggered by frequent substance abuse) ignites an internalization in all three as they define their personal feelings concerning mortality, purpose, burial rites and the conceptualizes. Differing philosophies lead to passionate crescendo when the time to put the corpse in the ground arrives and Darin reveals a lurid secret.
